April 15th MAKO Race Overview
What can you say about the MAKO opener this year??
Wind, wind and more wind, Tulsa had wind gusts between 25-35 MPH all day Saturday. After the first round of qualifying on the 1/4 mile, the track officials asked that we let the racers vote to see if they wanted to switch to 1/8th mile racing. The majority of the racers wanted to switch so we were running the short track. We had to go back and use the 1/8 mile times from the first round of qualifying which helped some racers and hurt some others. There were plenty of racer working hard to get their racecars up and running but time ran out on them to be able to make the first race of the year. So look for the next race May 20th to be a blowout and one you certainly don't want to miss.
Dave's RV ProMod Class
In the Dave's RV ProMod Class, last years points leader Dave Pierce come out on top as the Number #1 Qualifier but a small engine fire kept him from making the call for first round. Jim Wiens was definitely the benefactor of Daves troubles as that pairing had the bye run in the second round, so Jim's Turbo Charged 69 Camaro was heading straight to the finals.
Willie Brainerd in his 96 Camaro using brand new Blown Hemi power, was working out of the second qualified spot on the opposite side of the ladder. Willie took care of Troy Scotts improving Nitrous Opel, then took a narrow victory over Todd Martin's Blown 63 Corvette. The finals had lane choice going to Jim's Turbo entry but Willie charged off to the victory with a 4.258 to Jims shut off coasting pass of 8.36
World Wide Musclecars Outlaw 10.5
The World Wide Musclecars Outlaw 10.5 class had 7 cars qualifying, it was a mix of blowers, turbo's and nitrous powerplants. 2005 Champ Turbo Todd Kitchen paced the field with a 4.85 shot on his second qualifying pass. Todd got the first round bye moving him right into a semifinals match up with Stanley Morton's Mountain Motor Nitrous Ford powered 80 Fairmont, Stanley got away first with .08 advantage at the tree but Todd's 154 mph charge got past Stanley by a slim 9 thousandths for the win.
Larry Wrights Turbo Charged Beretta was making its MAKO debut and he did so quite well. Qualifying in the number 6 position, Larry drew Zach Wiedels Nitrous 67 Camaro but Zach redlighted away any chance he had at a win, sending the Beretta on to face Cory Peters in the second round. Corey's absolutely beautiful 67 Mustang Fastback with Twin Turbo Power had just come off a nice 5.07 pass giving him lane choice But Larry's 5.27 was plenty to handle Cory's slowing 6.60 pass.
Turbo Todd's Firebid verse Larry Wrights Beretta both had been having trouble with spinning the tires right off the line but with a freshly prepped track what would happen. Larry chopped the tree down cutting an amazing .007 reaction time to Todd's lazy .125 but it was another pedalfest for both racers but Todd turned out to be the more experienced at imitating John Force, Taking the victory with a 5.175 to Larry's 6.664
Wild Street
Wild Street just had 4 cars show up, There had been a lot of anticipation about Jason Hoard and his Procharged Camaro's recent 7 second passes and he did not disappoint, posting a record 7.94 ET would have been low qualifier but the switch to 1/8th mile put Ryan Martins Turbo Mustang at the number 1 qualifying spot with a 5.37. However neither of these cars were around for the finals as Reigning Champ Dewayne Mills (who was pulling double duty running his Real Street car in Both Wild Street and Real Street) Blue 68 Nitrous Camaro and New MAKO racer Jerry Skinner's Procharger powered Ford Lightning Pickup made the finals. Dewayne got around a slowing Ryan Martin and Jerry took the all Procharger first round over Jason Hoard. Dewayne combined a better reaction with a much quicker 5.35 to defeat Jerry's 5.55
Real Street
Last years Real Street Champ Alan Long does not look to be letting up on the competition, he qualified number 1 with a 5.41 and stayed in the 5.30's and low 5.40's on his way to the finals. 11 cars showed up for the first round of qualifying but only 10 were there for the first round.
Todd Taylor's fantastic looking Gold Dust 67 El Camino got out of shape and he ended up in the guardwall hard. Todd was shaken up quite a bit and thought he have broken some ribs, so he was taken to the Hospital to be checked out and we are glad to report that he is fine and no broken ribs.
Alans Long's first round opponent was Chris Rogers in his brand new 04 Mustang, wiring troubles kept Chris from being able to squeeze the nitrous so he was running handicapped motor only passes, but it would have taken a stellar pass from Chris as Alan's Black 69 Camaro put up a best pass of the day 5.373 to take the win. Alan had a bye in the second round putting him into the third round against Jeremy Taylor, Jeremy brought out a new car for Real Street, a 572 powered nitrous 91 Camaro.
Jeremy had 5.48 against a redlighting Jason Scott in the second round, Jeremy got the light but Alan's 5.45 was to much for Jeremy's 5.50 sending Alan to the finals. Dewayne Mills had qualified number 3 and picked off Eric French in his yellow Nitrous 68 Camaro in the first round. Dewayne's Blue 68 Nitrous Big Block Camaro moved to the second round to face new comer Jay Clarks Nitrous Small block 86 Mustang.
Jay took a win over a slowing Mike Burress in the first round with a 5.85. Jay stepped up with a 5.62 but was no match for Dewaynes 5.39 blast. Dewayne had single in the third round to move into the finals to face Alan. Dewayne was where he wanted to be having lane choice in the finals but it was all Alan Long, posting a quicker reaction time and a better ET 5.38 to Dewaynes 5.49
Top Sportsman
I have to say I am really going to like Top Sportsman if the 6 cars that showed up are an example of the quality and beauty of all T/S cars we should be in for a treat . However the initial running of Top Sportsman turned out to be a strange one. Robert Greener wrecked his Cavalier in the second round of qualifying. Lanny Maples wild Firebird cut a tire on his second qualifying pass leaving just 4 cars. Clock malfunctions plagued the first round of eliminations of Top Sportsman. Butch Marrs 63 Corvette Roadster looked to take the win over Ricky Tutors 27 ford Roadster and low Qualifier Kirk Peipke's looked to take the win over Shane Carters new Cavalier.
Confusion over whether reruns were in order left us with just Butch and Shane still at the Track and they decided to just split up the purse and not even run after all of the bizarre occurrences. Lets hope this does not taint what looks to be a good looking, competitive and exciting class.
Street Harley Class
We had just 2 Harleys show up for the newly formed Street Harley Class. I do not know if it was the threat of rain or the really high winds that kept the big V-twins from showing up, but Rob and Michael Lewis did. Michaels 04 V-Rod took the victory over Robs 2002 Buell 11.95 to a losing 13.22
10.0 Index Class
The 10.0 index class had 8 cars starting the first round. Charles Price 69 Camaro moved past first round with a win over Jason Roberts and Steve Bishop in his 71 Duster got a close victory over Mark Scott in the all Mopar first round. Charles met up with the 68 Camaro of Larry Ashlock Who's late light and break out sealed his fate sending Charles to the finals. Steve opponent in the Semi's was Justin Calico in his nice Black 79 Malibu however Justin redlighted away any chance he had the finals. Charles and Steve match up was pretty much decided at the start, Charles posted a .039 reaction to Steve's .272 that is an awful lot of ground to make up with Charles taking the win 10.23 to a losing 10.20
12.0 Index Class
The big class of the day was 12.0 but that is no surprise as this class is always well supported and very competitive. Wyly Kennedy got a double breakout win in the first round over Ken Anderson and Danny Ammons jump started his path to the Finals with a first round bye. Wyly and his 81 Malibu had to run Michael Haywood in the second round 2 good lights and 2 good passes but it was Wyly taking the win.
Danny's 78 Nova drew Mark Beavers in the second round Danny was late on the tree but posted a good 12.06 to move on to the third round. Wyly's third round opponent was the 62 Ford Pickup of Mike Steen, Steen posted a better ET but Wyly's better reaction put him in the final. Danny's Semi race was against the 86 Camaro of Chris Reynolds, Chris's breakout pass put Danny into the finals.
It was a double breakout affair for the finals but Wylys superior reaction put him under the 12.0 mark less than Danny, the 11.93 of Wyly took the win over Danny's losing 11.84
The 13.50 class pitted the husband and wife team of Greg and Carlen McLaughlin against John Rosson and Jeremy Maples. The husband and wife team did not fair very well as Greg lost to John Rosson's 86 S-10 and Carlene lost to Jeremy in a Diesel Dodge Pickup. John had the better reaction and ET in the finals taking the win over Jeremy 13.62 to a losing 13.75.
