May 20th Tulsa MAKO Race Overview
When looking at the calendar and all of the things going on race wise in our area, May 20th looked to be a tough day to put on a race, Racers had several events to choose from on this third Saturday of the month. I was a little worried "would we be able to draw cars?" Well draw cars we did, ProMod and Outlaw 10.5 looked like a who's who in each class from the MAKO area. We had a good show, fast times, new cars and a lot of excitement as "Turbo" Todd Kitchen did his best jet car flame show imitation (Car and driver are fine but we were worried for a bit, look at the photo's and you will see what I mean). All in all we had a good race, let's get to what happened...
Daves RV ProMod
The number one spot was captured by the Blown Willy's of Stan Smith with a 6.638 at a WHOPPING 220.62 WOW!! Eliminations got started with Stan getting the bye run and laying down an improving 6.513, #2 Qualifier Ron Muenks was having to put his 59 Corvette down the track against the ProMod points leader Willie Brainerd, Willie had struggled in qualifying but after a stellar performance at the first event we were looking for a good race, All was dashed when it was learned WIllie had burned a piston in qualifying and just rolled in and took the tree and watched as Ron raced off to a 6.656 @ 208.97.
The top 4 qualifiers all advanced to the Semis but we were delayed in being able to get the Semi's run due to the fireworks that Todd Kitchen's Outlaw 10.5 car put on right in front them. After a lengthy clean up and putting some index cars down the track, Stan Smith had lane choice over Dave Pierce in his 2001 Nitrous Camaro, and Ron Muenks had the pick in his race with Buddy Farmer's 2003 Blown Hemi Corvette. Dave and Buddy were handicapped by getting placed in the questionable lane as both of them shook the tires violently, Dave pedaled quick and recovered to run a 7.143 but it was no match for the 6.466 low ET of the event for the Bad Blown Willy's, Buddy just had to lift as Ron's Black Corvette laid down a bracket worthy to 6.645. Stan and Ron did not disappoint as the finals was one of the best we have had, Ron chopped the tree down with .002 reaction and put up a winning 6.629 to Stan's quicker but losing 6.612.
World Wide Musclecars Outlaw 10.5
Todd Kitchen lead qualifying with a 7.349 over #2 Qualifier Stan "The Man" Williams debuting his brand new Don Dial built 86 Z-28. At first glance the Camaro does not appear to be any different than Stan's Old Car, but a quick up close look proves this ain't Stan's Old Ride, He is loaded for bear in a purpose built Outlaw 10.5 ride.
Kitchen drew a bye run in the first round and complications kept him from doing no more than an easy drive down the track. Stan's first round would be none other than Chris "Mudduck" Derrick driving the newly freshened Twin Turbo Mustang of Mike McCullough. Stan was definitely the one getting a handle on his combination as he moved right into the semi' with a 7.337 to Chris's 7.757.
Williams had to run the Stanley Morton Mountain Motored Ford powered lenco shifted Mercury Zepher, but he was no match for Stan who laid down a very consistent 7.372 to Mortons 8.122, The other Semi had Mark Micke's Procharger early Camaro running Kitchen's Turbo Firebird, Todd's problems from the first round reared their ugly head as it looked like Todd was staging some kind of Staging Battle, a Broken front pump was not allowing the car to spool up and after a lengthy try heated tranny fluid poured from the vent and converter exploding to into flames. Micke had already staged and had to pedal his 3000 horsepower to a slowing 10.244.
Mark and Stan, Blower Vs. Nitrous, Early Vs. Late, Gas Vs. Alcohol... Who would win?? Stan made it look easy as Mark had problems and had to lift early. William's Camaro was off to a MAKO ET record 7.304. Very nice debut for Stan Williams and Don Dial Race Cars.
Wild Street
The Ford event in St. Louis has always put a hurting on our car count for Wild Street and this year was no different, Dewayne Mills was the #1 Qualifier with an 8.448 pulling double duty in his Blue Camaro again for this race while Mike "FatCat" White was busy qualifying Dewaynes Gold Camaro.
The ProCharger powered Mustang of Converter Guru Marty Chance sealed up the second qualifier spot with an 8.447. Marty was matched up with Ben French making a venture into Wild Street with his son Eric's 68 Camaro and Marty made quick work of getting around Ben with an 8.539 to Ben's 8.996. Dewayne Mills was having to run his own Camaro being wheeled by White, Mike was trying to work out some problems for Dewayne and was running the Golden Gorilla sans Nitrous so this was not going to be huge problem for Dewayne, but Dewayne did have some problems with surging in the blue car and slowed to 9.334 but was still much better than FatCats 12.24.
In the finals it was all Marty as the surging of Dwaynes Camaro had still not been resolved and Marty posted a winning 8.476 to Dewaynes 9.098.
Real Street
For the first time since we created Real Street, watch closely, A NITROUS BIG BLOCK CHEVY WAS NOT, I repeat, WAS NOT the number #1 Qualifier, That honor lies with Kirk Appleton driving the impressive Procharger powered Small Block Chevy Camaro that he runs with his Father. An 8.627 was what it took to pace the field. The second spot was held up by Chris "MOOSE" Morse at an 8.723, now usually a person would be happy being #2 but when it was learned that sitting in the #7 spot and waiting to run Moose in the first round was non other than last years Champion Alan Long. Now Alan had struggled with in qualifying running no better than 10.42. Alan figured out what his problems with the track were with a very stout 8.510 and Chris was not able to complete his pass.
Number 1 Qualifier Kirk Appleton ran an 8.550 against a troubled Chriss "Dr. Mustang" Roberts running a 9.306 in his new for this season 98 Mustang. Dewayne Mills had a rematch from the second round of the season opener with Jay Clark, Jay had huge nitrous back fire as Dewayne had a problematic 9.483. That is twice Dewayne has opened the door for Jay to get a win against him without Jay being able to make a full pass next to Dewayne.
Mills was the next to have face Alan Long and he proved to be up to the challenge even with a .000 reaction time Alan's 8.607 was no match for Mills 8.445, Kirk had to face John Heard in his first appearance at a MAKO race in awhile, John won a first round battle with Scott Willis but John's 9.416 ran into the Low ET of the Event 8.432 that Kirk whopped in the Semis.
In the finals Appleton put a better reaction time and a quicker ET to put Dewayne into his second runner up spot of the day, 8.486 to 8.585. Making Kirk not only our first small block #1 Qualifier but also our first small block winner.
Street Harley
Mike Lewis brought out a new V-rod purpose built for Fast Street Harley racing and promptly runs the first 9 second pass, 9.774 to easily take the number one position, New arrivals Kendall Nelson and Earl "The Pearl" rounded out qualifying, Kendall's Sportster posted a 10.748 and Earl trailed with a 14.627. Mike had the first round bye and improved on his qualifying to run a record setting 9.658 @ 137.79. Nelson had a the better light in matchup with Stokes but did not need it as his 11.14 easily passed his competitors 13.260. The Finals was all Mike Lewis, Kendall's 11.091 was no match for the 9.797 of Mike's beautiful new V-Rod.
Top Sportsman
We have moved the bump spot in the Top Sportsman class back to an 8.99 but the IHRA division race in Shreveport still kept the car counts down. Sam Harris's 95 Corvette was up against the 62 Corvette of Gene Carter, You have to hand it to Gene I am not sure how old he is but I know he is in his Mid 70's at least and is still out running with the kids, Gene was a little late on the tree and ran under his 8.84 dial in leaving Sam with and easy 9.034 on a 8.95 Dial, Jerry Gendreau was the low qualifier and picked up the first round bye so on a test run for him he goes .007 on the tree and 8.699 on a 8.70 dial in.
In the Finals Jerry's 86 Cutlass had the advantage at the tree and his .03 off 8.724 on a 8.69 dial in easily covered Sams 9.017 on a 8.97 dial in for the victory in our second Top Sportsman race of the year.
10.0 Index
5 cars showed for the 10.0 bracket this month, The April 15th Runner up Steve Bishop in his 71 Duster put a holeshot on the 67 Camaro of Mike Demoss causing Mike to breakout, Mark Scott used a much better light to put his 67 Dart around the Butch Demoss in the other Demoss family Camaro. The semis had Steve drawing the bye run and Mark running the 86 Mustang of Jason Roberts The lights were close but Mark pulled out the victory as Jason slowed a little bit.
The All Mopar finals had the best matchup of the 10.0 eliminations. Scott's Dart was first off the line with .009 reaction to Steve's .015 they were both of the 10.0 pace a little with Scott's 10.061 besting Bishops 10.076. Mark won the battle but Steve is winning the war as Steve's pair of runner up finishes had him leaving Tulsa with the points lead.
12.0
We had 15 cars show for first round of our 12.0 class, Wyly Kennedy is not letting up on the competition starting off by getting around the 92 GMC truck of Dennis Oliphant with a superior reaction time.
A couple pair later Randall Mink was taking care of business at the other end of the track, Randall was a little late off the line but posted a 12.001 to take care of the 67 Nova belonging to Jimmy Bradley. Second round had Wyly facing Kiah Fields in the always tough Farmtruck but again a better light for Wyly spelled WIN in his lane again.
Randall drew Larry Ashlock in his 72 Nova, Randal was behind at the tree again but used better top end driving to get his second round win. I guess Randall and Wyly wanted to try out each other style in the semis, Wyly was late at the tree against Mike Dolphin's 70 Camaro, who was coming into the semis with a win over Ed O'Brien, but a better tree did not help Mike as Wyly again was headed to the Finals.
Chris Reynolds 86 Camaro was Randall's semi competition, Chris took a win over Randall's Camaro with Bo Roach at the wheel in the second. Could he take out his second Team Mink entry? Not quite, they ran within a hundredth of each other at the end but it was Randall with the better reaction time moving on to the finals.
Wyly must have like that "come from behind racing" because he tried again in the finals and it worked again. Wyly was nearly .06 late at the tree but his 12.021 out of his 81 Malibu was better that 21.105 of Randall's 81 F-150 Ford Truck. That makes 2 races and 2 wins for Wyly out of OKC.
13.50
3 cars for 13.50, RD Pollard was racing the big tow rig diesel Dodge truck and got Paul Bradley to foul away his chances in the first round driving his 2002 Camaro. Brad Fowler pulled out a 13.59 on his bye run getting ready for his trip to the finals. Brad posted the better reaction and Ronnie was way off the 13.50 dial in making it easy for Fowler's 73 Duster to take the win with a 14.24.
Heads Up Mercedes
ProMod Racer Todd Martin and Track owner Dan Guterman pitted German engineering against each other for a little end of the Turnpike shootout. Todd driving his wife's new little 350 roadster and Dan driving the Big 500 AMG compressor hiway cruiser. Todd was forced to put the top up as glare from his head was effecting the staging beams. Tinted windows helped shield the glare problem from Dan's Chrome Dome. At the start it was all Big Hiway Cruiser as he easily paced the little Convertible. Something in the 12's to something in the 15's.
Todd stated that failure to understand how to turn off the traction control hampered his chances for victory. Dan spoke of his ability to make 40-50 test passes a day as his key ingredient to victory. Heads Up Mercedes will be run Bracket style at the next race for the loser to put money in the Victors favorite charity. Any more MB drivers want to put up a little money for Charity???? Heck, we would let any European Autobahn cruiser have the chance to give a little money to charity, Just come and see us!
