May 27th Race Overview

What else can you say about MOKAN other than it is always a whole lot of fun! Well, that is if you were not Scott Willis, Jay Clark, Kirk Appleton, Chriss Dr. Mustang Roberts, or maybe Dewayne Mills, I will elaborate later...

Having some of the MAKO classes being the "Booked in Show" at Carl's 40th Annual Memorial day race was a step in the right direction for our series, hopefully we can have it happen some more at a few more tracks next year.

All the guys did a great job putting on a good show for the fans, The Friday night qualifying was a new thing for us and it worked out great, Stan Smith in ProMod, Dewayne Mills in Real Street and Mike Lewis in Street Harley each picked up some of the Friday Night low Qualifier money. Now on to the racing

ProMod

The low Qualifier spot and first round bye was picked up by Rob Holzman's blown Beretta with a 4.32 at only 149 mph, Stan Smith's 4.34 from Friday night held up for the number 2 spot. First round had first time MAKO participant John Hocking getting around a troubled Jim Wiens Turbo Small Block entrant with 4.36 to 5.84. Points leader Willie Brainerd strapped a .004 light on the Blown Camaro of Wayne Roberts and then combined it with a better ET 4.52 to Waynes trailing 4.60.

Stan Smith's Blown Willies posted low ET of the event in his first round win over Chad Holzman 4.31 at an outstanding 170 MPH. Buddy Farmer bested the beautiful Blown 55 Chevy of Keith Goolsby 4.51 to 4.76. Second round Stan Smith was out first on a bye run and continued putting 4.30 something's runs down the track with a 4.38, John Hocking slowed a little to a 4.51 but it was no problem as Rob Holzman went red at the tree. Willie kept up his tree chopping as he picked up a holeshot win over Buddy Farmer's Blown Corvette 4.43 to Buddys 4.42. For the third round Willie would pick up the bye run and just rolled in took the beams and shut it off.

John Hocking and Stan Smith put up the race between the 2 fastest cars from eliminations, both cars were close at the tree but it was all over by the 60 foot mark as Stan shook the tires violently and John raced of to a winning 4.45.

In the finals Willie staged his Blown late model Camaro against John Hocking's first gen Nitrous Camaro, and Willie was first at the tree again and needed every bit of his .025 advantage as John's black beauty stopped the clocks at a 4.419 to Willies winning 4.431. Willie picked up his second win of the year.

Real Street

We almost had a complete blue car field, and as it turned out, we did for eliminations. The White Olds 442 of Scott Willis had transmission troubles and the Multi colored Mustang of Jay Clark burned a Piston, transmission troubles put out Chriss Roberts late model Mustang but it is blue anyways.

That left John Heard's blue 72 Nova, The Jason Twins blue 88 Mustang, Chris Roberts blue 87 Mustang (Chris kicked his son Jason out of the still running car), Kirk Appleton's blue early Camaro and Number 1 qualifier Dewayne Mills in his blue 67 Camaro. If you haven't got the picture yet just think "BLUE"!

Parts breakage got a hold of Real Street this race, something we have never seen before... smashed oil pans and headers yes, but absolute parts carnage? Never.

3 cars were already out, Kirk Appleton had to drive to Wichita Ks. in the middle of the night to pick up a new blower as they broke the input drive on theirs Friday night. Kirk picked up a competition bye and eased down the track to a 12.87. Jason Scott's competition was unable to make first round giving him a single and a crooked launch held him to a 6.37, Dewayne used his competition bye to equal his qualifying lap and posted 5.5.

Finally we get a first round race. John Heard was a little behind Chriss Roberts at the tree but his 5.74 was more than enough to cover Chriss's 6.71. Second round is up and troubles continue. Jason and Kirk go at it first and Jason improves to 5.61 as Kirk has more troubles and coasts down the track to a shut off 12.10 Dewayne combines a better reaction with a 5.53 to take out Johns 5.78.

For the second race in a row a small block is setting in the Real Street Finals and for the second time in a row THE SMALL BLOCK WINS, Jason Scott is there on the launch with a great .020 light and runs a tough to beat 5.60 as Dewayne has to just ease down the track with a broken converter. The Jason Twins, Scott and Clark pick up their first win of the year.

With the next race being an 1/8 mile one for the Real Street guys back at Mokan will it be 3 straight for the small block cars?

Street Harley

Mike Lewis just keeps getting quicker on the new V-rod. He was the Friday Night Low Qualifier with a 9.39 and just did not let up in eliminations. New comer Dirk Reese was # 2 Qualifier and faced Earl "The Pearl" Stokes in the first round. Earl was out first but Dirk motored by with a 12.37, Mike posted a 9.44 on his Bye run. Dirk was away first and running a bracket like 12.38 but Mike had just way to much for him with a winning 9.53.
